 Over 19 years experience in research and project management (as of 2004):

  • Effectively managed research projects, staff and resources from inception and budgeting, to planning, execution and reporting, with total budget of up to NZ$500,000 per year
 • Delivered timely solutions for clients, addressing their needs and adjusting outputs to fit in with their business practices
 • Collaborated within a variety of disciplines; liaised with a wide variety of staff in engineering, plant physiology, entomology, insect rearing, statistics, legal, marketing and public relations
 • Published [21 refereed papers], more than 100 reports to clients and the Foundation for Research, Science & Technology (New Zealand government funding body), publications in [conference proceedings], and [popular articles] and [posters]
 • Contributed to a successful country access research programme which gained access for a range of New Zealand fruits and fruit varieties to the lucrative Japanese market
 • Initiated, co-ordinated, managed and was actively involved in research programmes to control insects of quarantine concern on a wide variety of horticultural crops, forestry logs and flowers, and of nuisance insects in stored-products, using a wide range of disinfestation technologies
 • Initiated research under the biosecurity banner to predict possible insect establishment and spread using specialised software and climatic and biological data.

  • Ability to deal professionally with people of a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds
 • Adept at discussing topics both at a technical and layman's level
 • Excellent editing and technical writing; experienced referee for international journals
 • Multi-lingual (English and Dutch proficient; some German, French, Latin and Greek).
 • High level of computer literacy, from standard word processing, spread sheeting, and PowerPoint, to the use of specialist software for pest risk assessment and weather data manipulation; design and development/management of web sites (including html coding, use of javascripts) and digital image manipulation. Setting up of small business administration systems; maintenance of small business computer network.
